We’re John & Janet Slinn, the owners of Stargazers Cottage (also known as Dean Croft Holiday Cottage).  We live right next door, at Chestnut Farm, with our cats – Matty, Sirius and Loki.

After numerous holidays to the island for many years we finally moved from Sussex to the Isle of Wight in May 2017 and absolutely love living here!  Janet worked in financial services for over 30 years, and John was in the construction industry for nearly four decades!

Chestnut Farm and Stargazers Cottage were originally one historic barn, which was converted in 2004 into the beautiful accommodation you see today.

The Isle of Wight is like one big theme park – there’s masses to do, whatever the weather, and there’s always something going on in the evening – from the Island’s famous live music to carnival processions, street performances and much, much more.

Throughout my life I have always been interested in the sciences, especially astronomy. When digital cameras had advanced enough in the mid 1990s to be a viable tool for photographing the night time skies, I started on my journey into DSLR astrophotography.

In 2011, I created and currently moderate the astrophotography Facebook group ‘Disciples of the Dark Arts’, as I felt not enough help was being given to beginners or advanced amateurs in the processing of their pictures. Now with a membership of nearly 900, from all around the globe, it continues to thrive and provide help in this fascinating science.

I was proud to be nominated in the top 100 astrophotographers in the Royal Greenwich Observatories ‘Astrophotographer of the year’ competition in 2010 (new comers section).

In 2013, I entertained the dream of perhaps pursuing my hobby as a job and thus, eventually, Stargazers Cottage was born!
